The employee, a supply clerk at a long-term care facility, got a “terrible haircut” in October 2007. Concerned that she was unable to “do anything” with her hair, she wore a hat to work on Oct. 23, and for a week thereafter, with no comment from any of her supervisors.
But on Oct. 30, several company executives told the employee that company policy prohibited wearing a hat, and the director of nursing told the employee she would have to go home if she insisted on wearing the hat. The employee refused to take off the hat, and went home. Read More
The number of new claims filed with state agencies for unemployment insurance benefits increased to a seasonally adjusted 393,000 for the week ending Nov. 19, up 2,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 391,000, the Labor Department’s Employment and Training Administration reported Nov. 23. The ETA’s four-week moving average of initial claims—which analysts watch more closely because it irons out weekly fluctuations—decreased by 3,250 to 394,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 397,500.
