18 Oct Workplace Wellness and Your Company

In recent years there has been much talk about workplace wellness. What exactly does that mean? Workplace wellness refers to education and activities that your workplace can do to promote healthy lifestyles for your employees and their families. This could include health education classes, discounted fitness facility membership fees, fun group activities, vending choices, or any policies that would affect the health of your employees.

Workplace wellness can these have positive results for your company.

  • Wellness programs help control costs. By investing in your employees’ health you might be able to lower health care costs for your company. Higher risk employees who are overweight, smoke, or have diabetes, for example, cost more to insure and pay more for health insurance. A wellness program can assist them in making healthier choices to improve their quality of life. It will also help employees with few risk factors to remain healthy.
  • Healthy employees miss less work. Employees and their families who participate in a wellness program take less time off caring for family members as well as personal sick days.
  • Healthy employees are more productive
  • Improved morale within the organization. By showing you care enough about your employees and their family’s health, your company is seen as an attractive place to work. Retention of employees, along with attracting new employees, is a benefit for any company.

There are many wellness programs to choose from or you might want to develop your own program. Whatever you decide, remember that the payoff is much more than the dollars you will be saving, it will be the improved quality of life for the people you employ.
